In 2023, Ford issued a Recall that applies to certain 2019-2020 Ford Fusion Energi hybrid vehicles. Specifically, affected vehicles were those produced between 12/06/17 and 07/27/20 and are equipped with the 2.0L PHEV drivetrain and 30Ah high voltage batteries. Ford’s Recall Number is 23S33. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is investigating this recall identifies this Recall as Recall No. 23V-440.
Ford describes the issues with those specific Ford Fusion vehicles as follows: Current Interrupt Device (CID) activation in a high voltage battery cell can result in excess voltage and current flow through the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM), which can cause damage to the BECM. Ford describes the safety risks as follows: A damaged BECM caused by excess voltage and current flow can result in a loss of motive power which increases the risk of a crash, or a localized fire around the BECM, which increases the risk of injury.
Ford has notified certain owners of the 2019-2020 Ford Fusion hybrid vehicles about the recall. In their notice, Ford advised its customers to refrain from charging their vehicles to maintain a lower charge level in the high voltage battery, reducing the risk of a loss of motive power or vehicle fire until a remedy is available. In other words, Ford is telling consumers not to use the Vehicle like they are supposed to. Unfair, wouldn’t you say? Despite that the recall was issued sometime in the middle of 2023, as of April 2024, there appears to be no solution to the recall. In fact, on or about October 23, 2023, Ford issued a notice to all Ford dealers which provides the following warning:
DO NOT DEMONSTRATE OR DELIVER any new in-stock vehicles involved in this safety recall. An interim solution is being developed at this time and is expected to be available in late 2024.
Ford has also advised its dealers that “a battery replacement is not available at this time.” As such, consumers who are experiencing issues are left with no remedy and are unable to use their vehicles.
